History as encouraged us to remember the Maine, remember Pearl Harbor, remember 9/11 and now we should be encouraged to remember January 6.
All of those dates before January 6 were days when our country was attacked by foreign nations or terrorists. January 6 stands out as the day we were attacked by our own. The attackers were incited by lies about the legitimacy of an election and encouraged to stop the Constitutional transfer of power. It’s now being treated by Donald Trump and many of his supporters as a normal day of protest. What happened that day was not normal. It cannot be allowed to become remembered as normal. No nation, no society can condone, justify and treat as normal the events of January 6 and survive as a Constitutional republic. That day was the opposite of what we have held dear for the entire life of the United States of America. That is the peaceful transfer of power to the correctly identified winner of a national election.
We watched on live television as an incited and encouraged, violent mob, destroyed property, attacked police, threatened members of both houses of Congress as well as hundreds of Capital staff and our very own Vice President. People died that day and days after from injuries and other trauma. Hundreds, perhaps thousands of lives changed forever that day. It cannot be ignored or normalized.
The calls to “Hang Mike Pence” and “Where are you Nancy” should still be ringing in our ears. The sight of elected officials running from the threatening mob while a noose hung on the Capital grounds and hooded individuals beat police officers as others broke down doors and shattered windows should still burn in our memory. If by some chance you have become unwilling to trust your own memory of those sights and sounds you should wonder why that has happened. It is because the people who encouraged these events are trying to gain more power by making that day “normal”. To see it as it really was, is to see them as the threat they truly are to our democratic / republican form of government. Refresh your memory of that terrible day by following the link below. You saw these horrible events happen that day. Be careful of trusting anyone who tells you this is “normal”.
